Ceramic Coating vs. Wax in Albuquerque: Which Is Worth It?
Wax is great. Ceramic is better — but it isn't always worth the price. Here's how we help ABQ customers decide.
This is the most common question we get. Both ceramic coatings and waxes protect paint — but they do it very differently, last very different amounts of time, and cost very different amounts of money. Here's the breakdown without the marketing fluff.
Wax: the basics
Carnauba or synthetic wax bonds to your clearcoat for about 4–8 weeks in Albuquerque (less in summer). It produces a warm, deep gloss and is cheap — usually $40–$80 added to a detail. It has to be re-applied every couple of months to keep working.
Ceramic coating: the basics
A ceramic coating is a glass-like SiO₂ layer that chemically bonds to your clearcoat. Properly installed, it lasts 2–5+ years depending on the package, repels water and contaminants aggressively, and provides real UV protection — critical at ABQ's altitude.
Cost over 3 years
- Wax every 2 months: ~$60 × 18 applications = ~$1,080
- 3-year ceramic coating: ~$900–$1,400 one-time
Over a 3-year window, ceramic is usually cheaper and better protection.
When wax still makes sense
- You're selling the car in less than a year
- Paint needs correction first and you're not ready to commit
- You enjoy waxing your own car as a hobby
When ceramic makes sense
- Keeping the car 3+ years
- Parked outside in ABQ sun
- New or recently corrected paint you want to protect
- Tired of water spots from sprinklers and monsoon rain
