Monsoon Car Care in New Mexico: A Survival Guide
Monsoon season turns clean cars into a muddy mess overnight. Here's how to minimize the damage.
From July to September, Albuquerque gets short, violent thunderstorms that dump mud, gravel, and hard water on every parked car. Here's how to keep your paint intact through monsoon season.
Before the storm
- Apply a ceramic spray sealant or top coat — water beads dramatically reduce mineral spotting.
- Move the car off the street if hail is forecast (NWS issues alerts ~1 hour ahead).
- Keep windows fully closed; monsoon rain blows sideways at 40+ mph.
After the storm — the 24-hour rule
Caliche mud is mildly alkaline. Left on paint or undercarriage for more than 24–48 hours, it starts attacking clearcoat and accelerates corrosion on metal components. Rinse it off as soon as the storm passes — even a quick driveway hose-down beats waiting a week.
Water spots
ABQ tap water is hard. If you let your car air-dry after a wash or storm, mineral spots etch into clearcoat within hours of direct sun exposure. Always dry with a clean microfiber, or use a quick-detailer spray as you go.
When to book a decon wash
If your car has gone through 2–3 storms without a proper wash, book a paint decontamination. We'll iron-decon and clay the surface so monsoon fallout doesn't bond permanently.
